Advantages of Spin Cell Technology

As energy costs continue to rise and environmental sustainability becomes a topic of focus, energy consumers are increasingly demanding ways to offset their environmental impact.

V3solar’s Spin Cell is a spinning photovoltaic and specialized optics device with remote communication capabilities to enable efficient and cost effective electrical power generation.

By design, the Spin Cell has features that stand out in the solar industry and will assist market penetration, such as:

The Spin Cell is comprised of a conical shaped outer lens concentrator that provides efficient light concentration at a consistent focal width and focal range. Due to the patented conical shape, the Spin captures the optimum amount of sunlight during daylight hours eliminating the need for solar tracking and increasing electricity output, by design.

The lens concentrators are made up of a series of interlocking rings that connect to each other. The tubular lens produce substantial concentration of available light in light bands which effectively sweep over the moving PV. The lenses can be produced in a range of sizes to suit a variety of market needs reducing costs associated with developing Spin Cells with different power outputs.

Extreme heat normally associated with light concentration onto static PV material is avoided by the PV cycling in and out of the concentrated bands of light.

The revolutions per minute are precisely timed and automatically adjusted to take in enough sunlight to sustain photovoltaic segment light saturation at peak threshold, and reduce the heat of the PV by rotating it in and out of direct sunlight.

The solar industry has long known that concentrated lensing can dramatically increase electricity production.  But because the magnification focused on one, static point continuously, the intense heat could burn holes in standard PV or generate such high temperatures that the PV becomes inoperable, an effect similar to holding your hand beneath a magnifying glass. The Spin Cell enjoys the benefits of the concentrated light without the destructive issues of the intense heat.

The problem of strong winds that has impacted flat panels is expected to be removed due to the low wind sheer from the conical shape of the spin cell. This is another key advantage over the traditional flat PV panels that require structural reinforcements to protect against the wind.

The Spin Cell will use existing PV materials, keeping the price low and availability of key components easily accessible.  Additionally, by providing the existing supply chain with a new source of revenue, market acceptance will be rapid and enthusiastic.
Inverter or No Inverter

An inverter takes DC current and converts it to AC current. Most legacy solar systems are designed for DC output.  Fortunately, V3solar is being designed to provide DC or AC output with the flick of a switch, so integration into legacy systems is simple, thus increasing speed to market. Removing the costly inverter could create an immediate saving of ~$0.45/Wp of AC power.
Land Constraints

While land constraints have not been a primary concern for solar deployment in the past, this is certain to change.  According to the DOE, the world currently uses about 15,000 GW of power and by the year 2050 the world will require approximately 30,000 GW.

To satisfy this demand over the next 40 years, it would require building more than 1GW power plant each and every day!  If 25% of the build-out in annual capacity eventually comes from solar energy from flat PV panels it would correspond to over 7,000 km2 of utility scale solar power plant development every year. If these solar farms were based on our Spin Cell technology the area required for these farms could be reduced to less than 2000 km2 a massive cost saving alone through the reduction of land required, infrastructure, racking and ongoing maintenance.

The Spin Cell can also be mounted in an array on our “Power Pole” further reducing space needed for deployment as well as opening up new market opportunities such as replacing car-park lighting with power generating and street lighting from V3solar Power Poles that can be fitted with up to 17 Spin Cells per pole. On the Power Pole each Spin Cell is vertically and horizontally offset from the others in order to avoid a negative shadow effect and maximize electrical production from a given physical footprint.

Another inherent benefit of a Power Pole is the ability to operate Spin Cells above potential flood lines. This is an appropriate solution for flood prone regions such as Thailand, where floods have washed away entire solar farms.

It is envisaged that Spin Cell solar farms will be built to include monitoring for each Spin Cell, linked directly to a control room to maximize energy output and the overall performance of the individual spin cell or farm of spin cells

The Spin Cell is expected to offer a lower cost per watt installed due to the reduction in the amount of land required for its installation and the improved performance of the Spin Cell.

V3solars’s conical form factor and dynamic flash rate are being designed to provide a clear path to a 5X increase in energy at a 50% cost reduction per watt. While solar panel cost is the standard metric, the total cost of energy produced is the bottom line.  The lowest panel cost does not guarantee the lowest total cost of energy.  By factoring in tracking, inverters, power density, location and dynamic flash rate, V3solar is expecting to provide the lowest Total Cost of Ownership and a significant market opportunity with the most efficient energy production under the sun.
