LOS ANGELES--(Solar News)--Constellation Place, LLC, today unveiled an installation of solar panels designed to provide a portion of the electrical power required by MGM Tower. Coupled with the steps Constellation has already taken to conserve daily energy consumption, this solar array will make the building one of the ‘greenest’ retrofitted structures in the country.

“We are committed to the concept and reality of sustainable building operations,” said Patrick Meara, Senior Vice President of JMB Realty, an affiliate of Constellation Place. “We believe that investing in the conservation of resources is good for our business, good for our tenants, and good for the communities we serve. The City of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power are leaders in promoting the installation of solar photovoltaic systems, and made it easy for us to do the right thing.”

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined Constellation Place, LLC officials in unveiling the field of solar panels on the top level of the MGM Tower parking structure. “Because of companies like Constellation Place, LLC, the City of Los Angeles is setting the standard for a green, sustainable economy,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. “Our green building program is bringing the private sector to the table to cut pollution and expand conservation.”

“I’m pleased that MGM is able to support a green work environment which is also creating greater energy efficiencies,” said Harry E. Sloan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. “MGM has been committed to improving the studio’s environmental impact as well as the financial return and social good that comes with cleaner, greener work practices, and the installation of solar panels at our company’s headquarters building is certainly an important step toward that goal.”

Installed by SPG Solar, specialists in solar power construction, the field covers the top parking deck level at MGM Tower on Constellation Boulevard in Century City. The system has a total of 1,408 panels covering more than an acre. It is expected to generate 570,095, kWh annually and eliminate 277 metric tons of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to 31,452 gallons of gasoline or 92 acres of trees.

MGM Tower is a 775,037 rentable square-foot Class A office building located in Century City. It was completed in 2003 and is currently 99 percent leased. In addition to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., MGM Tower is home to International Lease Finance Corporation, International Creative Management and Glaser, Weil, Fink, Jacobs and Shapiro.
Previous efforts to boost energy efficiency earned MGM Tower a LEED® Silver certification in the existing building category from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), one of the first such achievements in Los Angeles.
